This is a late 19th century Chinese altar table that has been altered for use as a table behind a low sofa. Altar tables typically have the shallow depth needed for a table placed behind a sofa but often are too high for that use. That is most likely why this one, somewhere along the way, had its legs shortened by a few inches. While its antique value was adversely affected by the alteration, its usability, at least from a Western point of view, may have been enhanced. The wood, elm in a rich medium brown hue, has the character that only many years of use can produce. The construction remains quite solid, and inspection of the underside of the table indicates that alterations to the original antique piece were limited to removing a few inches from the bottom of each leg. Dimensions: height 25” (63.5 cm), length 39” (99 cm), depth 14 ½” (38.9 cm).
