| An embroidered silk cloud collar made for a child in late 19th century China has seven silk lappets, each embroidered with a lamb. In both city and provincial households, embroidery, an ancient Chinese art form, used symbolic animals, birds and flowers in free designs to express hopes for the future of family members. The lambs on this charming Shaanxi Province collar symbolized filial piety, an important Confucian trait that was encouraged on this piece seven times over. Called cloud collars, such garments were constructed of floating panels, or lappets, that more or less resembled clouds. On this piece, the lappets are attached to the main collar with beads. In a nice whimsical touch, the maker added little tufts of colored silk that puff out from the chins of five of the lambs. For display purposes, the black silk collar has been mounted on eggshell-colored silk and framed in a simple black Asian frame. The piece is in very good condition. Dimensions including frame: 20 ¼” (52 cm) square, depth 1” (3 cm). The collar itself measures 14 ½” (37 cm) in diameter. | |||||||
