| This red lacquered wood teacup box from 19th century provincial China has an especially pleasing shape and patina. Happy looking dragons hold the tall handle in their mouths, and at the center are two robed figures holding streamers. The handle, carved both on front and back, folds down for compact storage. Boxes such as this, used throughout China to store small teacups, were handmade, hand carved and generally lacquered red, the Chinese color of joy. We never have seen two of these boxes exactly alike, although most are made in barrel fashion of shaped staves fitted together and held in place with metal bands. The size, shape, lid, handle and carving as well as the shade of red lacquer used for provincial tea boxes varied greatly. This one has an oval shape not seen as often as the round ones. From the late Qing period, it is in very good condition, with appropriate wear to the lacquered surface. Dimensions: height to top of handle 13” (33 cm), width 13”, depth 10 ½” (27 cm). | |||||||||
