| Vignettes from Chinese operas are painted on this octagonal 19th century wood trunk. Rendered primarily in orange/red, cream and black, and framed in red and blue, the scenes float on a striking turquoise background. On one side of the piece, a large dramatic orange/red flower painting gives variety to the colorful vignettes. The trunk, or lidded box, is one of the many types of decorative containers once used in Chinese households to store shoes. It has metal carrying handles on the sides, and the lid is removable. The size and shape make it adaptable for use as an interesting small side table. Made of Chinese pine, the piece is quite solid, and the worn painted surface has an inviting patina. Dimensions: height 13 ½” (34 cm), width 21" (53 cm), depth 17” (43 cm). | |||||||||||||||
