| A swirling pastoral scene centered with a fantastic plum tree is represented in this polished, slab-shaped Chinese scholar’s rock. Classified as a “fantastic” or representational stone, one in which viewers see pictures from this and other worlds, it is in shades of molten caramel with touches of green floating across the lower right and left quadrants. The shape of the tree, which an earlier owner perceived as a plum tree, is echoed by another small tree of the same shape in the distance. Green mounds and sprigs represent grasses, and a dark shape on the ground to the right of the tree seems to be a broad-brimmed hat. The other side of the stone is a more abstract arrangement of the same colors. A type of scholar’s rock that recalls the “dreamstone” tablescreens of marble in which the Chinese saw “paintings” of mountains, animals and legends, it is from the area of Lingyanshan, between Suzhou and Lake Tai. While it is difficult to determine precisely when a stone was “harvested” for display, this one is most likely from the early 20th century. Dimensions including stand: height 9” (23 cm), width 12 ½” (32 cm), depth 2” (5 cm). | ||||||||
