| A small lacquer box incised with the Burmese “yun” technique has an unusual lid design of a scarf encircled with foliage. Using the yun method, the pattern is accomplished by cutting through top layers of lacquer to reveal one or more differently colored lacquer layers underneath. In this case, just black and light red lacquers were used, producing a container with a simplicity that sets it apart from the multi-colored intricate yun work seen on the larger cylindrical betel boxes from Burma. This elegant little early 20th century container has some minor surface cracking on the lid. The pristine condition of the inside surfaces suggests very light use, and a sniff test suggests it held herbs or medicines. Dimensions: height 2 ˝” (6 cm), diameter 4 ˝” (11 cm). | ||||||||
