| A small cossack outfit with 12 bullet pockets has a dashing cut that evokes intrigue in the Caucasus. Its small size suggests it was made for a young boy but the beautiful construction of the wool coat, satin shirt and cotton trousers further suggest it had more importance than a mere costume. We purchased this outfit in the Republic of Georgia a few years after Georgia's independence in 1991 following 70 years as part of the USSR. The history of the uniform is lost but a guess is that it was made mid-20th century and used for youth marches or rallies. White cylinders are substituted for bullets in the twelve pockets. The rust-colored satin shirt has black frog closings and piping, the fitted wool coat is lined with cotton across the shoulders and back, and the trousers have an elastic waist and long ties at calf-length to accommodate high boots. All pieces are in good condition. Dimensions of coat: length 35" (89 cm), width of shoulders 15-1/4" (39 cm), width of sleeve tip to sleeve tip 55-1/2" (141 cm). Shirt length: 22" (56 cm). Trouser length: 28-1/2" (72 cm). | |||||||||
