| Artist Levan Mekhouzla merges lyrical with architectural and East with West in this quiet etching of a simple scale. Mekhouzla lives and works in his native Tbilisi in the Republic of Georgia as well as in Paris, and his work is exhibited throughout Europe. Early training as an architect forms the foundation for his carefully executed etchings and lithographs, which he then softens with whimsy. Influences from Tbilisi, where Asia blends with Europe, also inform his work, and he often includes notations in a "non-language" he invents that, he says, is meant to represent a universal or world language without national or regional borders. This etching has a number of faint notes scrawled across the lower third portion which add interest and may or may not be decipherable by a Georgian architect. His studies of objects--we have seen one series of a chair, another of a metronome--tease the poetic from the precise. Done in 1990, this study of a scale is framed, matted and in perfect condition ready to hang. Framed dimensions: height 21-1/2" (55 cm), width 27" (69 cm). Etching dimensions: height 16" (41 cm), width 22" (56 cm). | |||||||||||||
