Chrysanthemum Motif Japanese Silk Brocade Obi
The chrysanthemum, a classic Japanese design element, is worked elegantly into a geometric pattern in this silk brocade fukuro obi. Worn by Japanese women with kimono, the obi is used as a belt to adjust the length of the kimono and is tied in a variety of complex ways. Obi are the palettes on which Japanese textile artists have lavished their skills. The richness of the long belts has always been regarded as equal to or more important than that of the kimono. Old silk obi have become collectors' items, and today are used with dramatic results as home decorating accessories, becoming table runners, wall hangings and throws. This one is especially striking, with chrysanthemums worked in gold thread set within hexagons arrayed on an orange background. The hexagon design may have been a family crest, or mon. Constructed in the fukuro style with an unpatterned back and the design covering 60 percent of the front, the obi was artfully tied so that the plain fabric acted as a background to showcase the brocaded design. It is from the early 20th century and is in excellent condition. The length is 158" (401 cm) and the width 12" (31 cm). The brocade pattern on the front measures 100" (254 cm) at one end, 14" (36 cm) at the other end.
