Japanese Blue And White Ceramic Hibachi
The fine heavy porcelain of this early 20th century Japanese hibachi has an unusual design that contains a loose, misty pine and bamboo painting within precise brocade borders. The meandering pine and wisps of bamboo leaves, done in the style of muromachi ink painting, is at the opposite end of the Japanese design spectrum from the regularity of the stenciled borders. The pine and bamboo, of course, are traditional, widely recognized Asian symbols of longevity. We acquired this piece in 1989 while living in Japan, where we first saw Westerners there adapting these wonderfully decorative pots for use as jardinere. The original purpose of these ceramic vessels was as holders for the smoldering charcoal that was used as a heat source in old Japanese houses. Heavy ceramic hibachi such as this one that are without ash residue because they were lined with another material or never saw use as hibachi also can be used as handsome ice buckets. This hibachi is in perfect condition. Dimensions: height 9-1/2" (24 cm), diameter 9-1/2".
