Lacquer Rattan Pattern Burmese Bowl
Beautiful basketry is strengthened and preserved under many applications of cinnabar and black lacquer on this low handwoven rattan bowl. The bold and unusual pattern of the rattan weaving is retained as the design element of the piece. Rather than completely covering the basketry texture of the entire surface, as was generally done when woven bamboo was used as a base for lacquer, the artisan in this case covered and smoothed only the interior surface of the bowl, leaving the black lacquered texture on the exterior for dramatic contrast with the smooth cinnabar lacquered interior. The inside surface was created using the traditional Burmese lacquer process involving a pliable substance called "thayo," which is spread over the basketry in several layers. Each layer is dried and hardened, then burnished before the finishing lacquer is applied. This sturdy yet lightweight bowl from the early 20th century is an example of the finely honed skills in Burma for both basketry and lacquer work. It is in excellent condition. Dimensions: height 6" (15 cm), diameter 16" (41 cm).
