Carved Teak Burmese Buddha On Tall Throne
An unusual Mandalay Buddha seated on a high stepped throne is carved of teak wood covered in a light gold-colored wash applied over red/brown lacquer. The hand position, with palms resting on knees, is rare for a Burmese Buddha, as is the tall throne with exaggerated step design. Elaborate lappets and border trim on the robe and throne are of molded lacquer called "thayo," a Burmese technique done with a mixture of boiled lacquer and finely powdered bone, cow dung or ash that closely resembles wood carving. This mid-20th century regal Buddha with its beautiful serene face commands attention. The statue is best displayed above eye level. Especially dense teak was used for the figure, which is nearly two feet tall and quite heavy. It is in very good condition. Dimensions: height 23-1/2" (60 cm), width 9-1/2" (24 cm), depth 7" (18 cm).
