| This carved wood Buddha from Burma has an especially compelling open and friendly countenance. The half-closed eyes gaze calmly and directly at you whether the figure is placed at eye level or above. The right hand, pointed down in bhumisparsa mudra, is carved so the fingers bend ever so slightly outward, inviting touch. Rounded carving on the figure, the robe and the double lotus throne conveys softness, an effect that is heightened in contrast to the sharp points on the spiked hair and finial. Lacquer in a warm red/brown tone shows through the gold leaf in many areas, creating an attractive patina. The triangular face with small, up-turned mouth on this late 19th/early 20th century figure is typical of the style introduced during Burma's Ava Period. Also harkening back to that era are the relatively large finial, forehead band and ears that bend slightly outward where they touch the shoulders. This appealing Buddha is in very good condition. Dimensions: height 13-1/2" (34 cm), width 7" (18 cm), depth 5" (13"). | |||||||||||||||
