| Noah and his ark are shown in this mid-20th century Turkish miniature that was painted on a page taken from a 19th century Islamic manuscript. Noah, a revered Muslim prophet, was a favorite subject of Turkish miniaturists. The ark, as imagined by these painters, was often a fanciful vessel. Here it is a bowl-shaped boat with a gold animal that perhaps represented a sea creature serving as the bow and a curved gold tail jutting from the stern. Noah is alone with his animals, and two of them, the elephant and the giraffe, are clearly not happy about the voyage. Arabic calligraphy above the miniature relates to Noah. The manuscript paper has discoloration and foxing around the edges but the painted area is in good condition. Dimensions: height 10" (26 cm), width 7" (18 cm). | |||||||||
