| The splendor and sophistication of the Delhi court 300 years ago are reflected in this pair of Indian miniatures of a king and queen of Delhi. Painted in the mid-19th century, the portraits memorialize Delhi's past rulers in classic Mughal style. The king, dressed in gold, purple and peach finery, is shown holding a small red book. Two panels above the portrait repeat images of his elaborate headpiece and the book. Panels below show his royal slippers and two flowers. The colors of the queen's attire echo those of the king. She holds a bird. Her fingers are adorned with henna, her hair carefully curled and she wears intricate long earrings, a nose ring and has beads draped in her hair, around her neck and edging her splendid cuffs. Panels above her portrait show images of her headpiece and the bird. Her jewelry and slippers are shown in the bottom panels. Inscriptions in Urdu surround both portraits. The backs of both paintings also are covered with Urdu writing, which may have been on the original old manuscript pages that were used for the paintings. Edges of the paper show some discoloration. The painting of the king has a tear on the right side which is not apparent and would not need to be mended if the piece is framed (see close-up photos). The portraits are in very good condition.
