| Three fish made of 47 tiles of lazurite (lapis lazuli) form this unusual necklace from Turkmenistan. The brilliant blue lapis used in this piece most likely was mined in neighboring Afghanistan, one of the world's main sources of lazurite. Lapis tiles forming the fish are unpolished and scored on each side with fine lines to represent the shimmer of fish in the water. Each tile has two horizontal internal holes to allow the piece to be double strung. Small lapis beads cover the string between the fish and on each side where the fish tails are connected to a woven silver chain. This handsome and fascinating necklace was made in the late 20th century. Total length of the piece is 30" (76 cm), length of the lapis portion is 16" (41 cm) and the widest lapis tile is 3/4" (2 cm). | ||||||||
