| This pretty sterling silver bracelet from India's Jain minority has a clever three-tiered link system with mesh-like flexibility and just the right amount of weight, making this an exceptionally comfortable piece of jewelry. It is designed around 20 slightly serpentine-shaped crests, each topped with a raised, elongated "S" shape. These small crests are divided into sets of four and separated by four larger polished crests in the shape of a four-leaf-clover, creating a nice interplay of shine and texture. The Jains, who follow a religion that merges elements from both the Buddhist and Hindu religions with their own complex belief system, are highly skilled jewelry makers, among their numerous other accomplishments. Though they account for approximately only .4 percent of India's population, the Jains have markedly influenced the country's artistic traditions. Jains live primarily in the northern states of Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. This Jain bracelet dates to the mid 20th century and is in excellent condition. The length is 7-1/4" (8 cm). It is 3/8" (1 cm) wide. The weight is 32 grams. | |||||||||
