| Seven images of Ganesha (Ganesh), god of wisdom, bringer of luck and clearer of obstacles, are embossed on the seven silver pentagon plates that form this early 20th century necklace. The weight of this piece is 85 grams. It originated in the north Indian state of Rajasthan and is 92.5 percent pure silver. Fashioned in a clever manner that gives the necklace flexibility to fit comfortably, the five-sided silver images are strung top and bottom on hidden leather cords that run through silver tubes on the back of each pentagon. Triangular pieces flank the outer images and are attached to a silver chain. Three small balls dangle from the bottom of each pentagon, giving movement to the necklace. On the chain, 14 tiny silver lotus shapes are affixed to the links for added interest. Ganesha, the most familiar and popular god in the Hindu pantheon, is depicted with four arms and his traditional attributes--dishes of sweets, a lasso and a mouse. The contours of Ganesh's round body and elephant trunk closely resemble the shape of both Sanskrit and Tamil calligraphy characters for the holy sound of "OM," which is one explanation for the origin of the fanciful image. Worshipped by Hindus, Buddhists and Janists, the happy, rotund god embodies the pleasant concept that earthly delights do not have to be obstacles to profound spiritual insight. Ganesha is called upon prior to travel and major ventures, especially business dealings. He also is venerated as the protector of knowledge, books and education. This Ganesha necklace most likely was made as a gift for a daughter to bring her all good things throughout her life. It is in excellent condition and shows just slight wear to the face of the center Ganesha. The length of necklace is 15" (38 cm). Dimensions of each pentagon: height, including beads, 2" (5 cm), width 1-1/4" (3 cm). | |||||||
