| An Indian miniature that shows the strong influence of Mughal style on Rajasthani painting, this work depicts Sawai Man Singh, who was the Maharajah of Jaipur more than 200 years ago. The exquisite work has beautiful detail in the gold designs on the sword and the floral patterns on the shoes, scarf and hem of the robe. Small gold designs cover the orange robe, and fine gold lines radiate from a green nimbus. These rich colors are enhanced by a narrow black border with delicate gold scrolling that is surrounded by a wider border with gold speckles. The overall formality of this mid-19th century miniature is quite Persian in feel. This attractive work is in excellent condition. The heavy paperboard it was painted on has fragments of notes or records on the back, indicating that the board apparently was reclaimed from an earlier use. Dimensions including outer gold speckled border: height 8" (20 cm). width 5-1/4" (13 cm). Dimensions of image and inner border: height 6-1/8" (16 cm), width 3-1/8" (8 cm). | |||||||||
