Mongolian Painted Trunk
Paintings with great provincial charm cover the front of this large mid-19th century Mongolian trunk. Each image is loaded with symbolic meaning. There's a rooster for courage, benevolence and protection against fire. The rooster is stalking a cricket, another emblem of courage and a sign of summer. There are two different types of scrolls to ensure continual happiness and prosperity for the household, and two butterflies, symbol of joy, summer and marital fidelity. Large red/orange peonies in the center painting next to the rooster represent love, affection, feminine beauty, good fortune and Spring. Chrysanthemums, lotus and plum blossoms are there as well to represent the other three seasons. And, for good measure, there are seven long life signs. This old trunk wears its 150 years in an appealingly up front manner, with a scar across its painted surface and evidence of heavy use on top and sides. Because of its very solid construction, it most likely can serve another 150 years. The large size and storage compartment and bright, historical iconography of this trunk make it appropriate for use as an attractive container for quilts at the end of a bed. Dimensions: height 23" (59 cm), width 34-1/2" (88 cm), depth 24" (61 cm).
