Qing Chinese Robe Stand--Striking Headboard
From mid-19th century China, this stand held the heavy silk brocade and embroidered robes worn in wealthy households during the Qing Dynasty. The width of this large piece makes it nicely adaptable for use as a striking headboard for a queen-size bed. Eight fretwork spandrels give a light and open look to the dark walnut wood. Pierced carving on the center roundel depicts foliage surrounding a relief carving of the symbol for long life. The two open diamond-shaped insets at the sides echo a design from the Ming period. Upturned ends on the top rod, typical Qing design elements, help in achieving the light effect. The stand is carved on both sides and in an old Chinese mansion would have been placed in a central area as both a decorative and functional piece of furniture. Because it was made to hold heavy robes, it is anchored with solid pedestals on either side so it could also function as an unusual room divider. Because it is constructed with Chinese tenon joinery, the pedestals can be easily removed so the stand can be wall mounted as a headboard or as wall art. It is in excellent condition. Including the pedestals, the height is 64" (163 cm), outer width of top upturned pieces 78" (198 cm), depth 21" (53 cm). The width between the two vertical end rods is 62-1/2" (159 cm).
