| A fanciful gold leaf ark with private port holes for the animals is portrayed in this mid-20th century Turkish miniature painted on a page from a 19th century Islamic manuscript. Noah, a revered Muslim prophet, was a favorite subject of Muslim miniaturists. He often is pictured with the expression he shows in this piece--bored nonchalance--while surrounded by a lively scene of workers, waves and animals. This miniature provides the prophet with an especially imaginative ark shaped like a composite animal with brightly colored sails flying from its long tail. Arabic calligraphy relates the story of the flood. The painting is in excellent condition; the thick paper is discolored around the unpainted margin but otherwise is in good condition, flexible with no signs of turning brittle. Dimensions including border: height 12" (30 cm), width 8" (20 cm). Dimensions of painting only: height 9-1/4" (23 cm), width 6-1/2" (16 cm). | ||||||||
