| Plenty of arrows, essential to a good Japanese battle scene, whiz by the brave Emperor Godaigo in this representation of an historical skirmish that took place in the 14th century. This depiction of the Emperor's efforts to stem the tide of escaping warriors is a print from a pictorial album of Japanese history produced in 1935 in Japan by the Seibunsha office of Shohgo Takeuchi Publishing. The album, Yamatozakura, was hand assembled and contains wonderful illustrations of heroic figures. The exceptionally fine printing on heavy, faintly textured paper gives great energy to the details and depth of the scenes. In this print, the spirited horse and steely-eyed Emperor in full battle regalia stand in colorful contrast to a misty Mount Fuji in the background. Text to the right of the scene recounts the battle. This glimpse into Japanese history is in excellent condition, with sufficient border to be matted and framed.
