Japanese Han Haba Obi Meiji Era
Silk brocade with the pattern on both sides for its full length, this Japanese obi (kimono belt) is called han haba because it is half the width of a standard size obi. Not as formal as the similarly constructed maru obi, this narrow style was worn with kimono at home, with yukata in the summer or with a child's kimono. The unusual colors in this one--dull gold, yellow, white and lilac on a dark turquoise background--and its free design bring a casual note to its richness. Small obi such as this add softness and interest used as decorative elements draped over chests or down the steps of a kaidan-dansu. This late 19th century piece shows nice wear along the sides (see photo enlargements) and is in very good condition on both sides. It measures 116 inches (292 cm) in length, and is 6 inches (15 cm) wide.
