| Vignettes painted primarily in shades of green, tawny reds and ochre decorate two sides and the lid of this late 19th century Chinese trunk. Scenes depict an elegant gentleman offering a fan to a lady, a couple with their servant, and on the lid, two warriors in battle regalia. The ends of the trunk have metal handles inset over paintings of flowers. The background is a very dark, almost black, green and the octagonal shape is formed by wood pieces fitted together. Lidded boxes such as this, once used in China to store shoes, are the ideal size to serve as interesting side tables. Though the painted surfaces on this late Qing Dynasty piece show wear, the trunk is in quite solid condition. Dimensions: height 15" (38 cm), width 22" (56 cm), depth 17-1/2" (45 cm). | |||||||||||||
