| The graceful abstract shape of this silver pendant from the nomadic Turkomen (Turkmen) who roamed across Central Asia suggests a bird in flight. Incised patterns on the silver are gilded and the piece is set with four cabochon cornelians. Seven small embossed tear-shaped pendants on chains give movement to the highly stylized bird. The ornament is typical of the Teke tribe and dates to the early 20th century. Extra importance and dimension are given to this piece through the artisan's use of a box technique--individual shaped silver pieces created for the front and back were fused together with a 1/4-inch silver spacer rim to add depth. Another Turkomen technique, which involves the application of a heated mixture of gold dust and quicksilver, was used in the gilding process. The ornament hangs from a leather cord (not original) and is in excellent condition. For a description of Turkomen jewelry, see "The Arts and Crafts of Turkestan," by Johannes Kalter, Thames and Hudson, 1984. Dimensions: height of large pendant 3" (8 cm), height including small hanging pendants 5" (13 cm), width 2-3/4" (7 cm), depth including cornelians 3/8" (2 cm). | ||||||||||
