| Used for presentations of food to a monastery, this early 20th century Burmese lacquer hsun-ok has family dedications written in black lacquer bands encircling the top and foot of the container. A lacy design of flowers in black lacquer covers the entire middle section of the container where lid and pedestal fit together. Glossy cinnabar-colored lacquer covers the hsun-ok exterior and is visible beneath the black lacquer designs; the interior is black lacquer. Bands of cinnabar lacquer relief work decorate the waisted area of the pedestal. A family offering of rice, fruit, boiled eggs or curry taken through the streets in this container, usually carried on the head of a graceful woman, made a dramatic statement of meritorious devotion. The tall spire echoes the shape of a Buddhist stupa or the spire of a temple. The condition of this hsun-ok is excellent. Dimensions: height 24 1/2" (62 cm), diameter 13 1/2" (34 cm). | |||||||||||||||
