| An intricately textured surface and delicate color shadings against brilliant white combine to make this a scholar's rock of breathtaking beauty. The carved hong mu base has an elliptical shape that balances and stabilizes several overhanging projections on the vertically oriented rock. Judging by the shape of the rock, popular during the Qing Dynasty, and the type of base, typical during early Qing years, this piece most likely was collected during the 19th century or earlier. Classified as a "Ying rock," it is limestone with pockets of calcite. The surface is bubbled, wrinkled and pierced with numerous small holes. Visible from some angles are subtle colorations of pinkish buff or light grey; other angles are stark white. This type of rock often was cut from caves, which may account for its resemblance to a stalactite. Dimensions: height 20 1/2" (52 cm), width 9" (23 cm), depth 5 1/2" (14 cm). | |||||||||||||||
