| Paintings on the doors of this mid-19th century Chinese scholar's box from Zhejiang Province have faded and mellowed. Figures of a master in grand robes with his servant behind him carrying a banner can be seen on the right door; a slender lady, also followed by a servant with a banner, is on the left door. Each scene includes a different species of bird in the bottom foreground, perhaps one type of bird symbolizing feminine qualities, the other male attributes. Both paintings are muted to the extent that, at first glance, they merely suggest the figures. The box has carrying handles on the sides and four interior drawers to serve as portable storage for a scholar's ink sticks, seals and other small items he prized. The surface of the wood, a rich, reddish cypress, is worn to a nice patina. The box is in very good condition. Dimensions: height 12 1/2" (32 cm), width 14 1/2" (37 cm), depth 12" (30 cm). | |||||||||||
