| Hangings with auspicious symbols wishing good fortune and long life were deemed essential for newly married couples in provincial China. This pair of 19th century silk embroidered banners originated in Shaanxi Province and were made to be hung on either side of the marriage bed. Each banner is constructed of five shaped silk pieces arranged in a line from narrow at the top to wide at the bottom and held together with beads strung on silk thread. Cut out shapes in the bottom two pieces represent ruyi, a mushroom-shaped emblem for long life. The bottom of each banner is finished with a light metal seal and silk tassels. Backed with black silk and framed, this pair is in good condition, colorful and interesting examples of provincial Chinese folk art. Dimensions of each framed piece: height 39" (99 cm), width 12" (30 cm). | ||||||||||
