| Remarkably professional stitchery and harmonious color combinations and shapes are found in embroidered silk objects that were made by Chinese home embroiderers. The sophisticated work on this 19th century cloud collar was executed with only a few different types of stitches but they are nearly perfect stitches--tiny with exact spacing and even tension. Attached to the circular embroidered neckpiece are 13 embroidered lappets that loosely resemble clouds, hence the name cloud collar. While cloud collars all were made along the same general pattern of lappets individually attached to a neckpiece, the home artisan invented shapes and designs with great creativity. This one has stylized, almost abstract flowers embroidered at the end of each thin lappet that is further outlined and filled in with scrolling. When spread out flat, the collar becomes a dramatic starburst. The piece is in good condition. It is backed with silk and framed in a rounded Asian-style frame. Dimensions: height and width 23" (59 cm). | |||||||||
