| This 16th century Chinese export plate, with its blue/grey designs, thick glaze and sandy, reddish body, typifies a category of Swatow Ware known as Kitchen Ming. Shipped from the South China port of Swatow throughout Southeast Asia, it is the least refined of Swatow export wares and is collected for its spontaneity of design and earthy appeal. The character "shou" for longevity seen in the center of this plate commonly was applied to Kitchen Ming items with a very wet brush in a free manner, giving heavier, darker color at the ends of the brush marks. Because the plates were stacked in the kiln, biscuit and foot are unglazed. On some of the plates, the reddish clay body shows through the glaze as it does on this one, adding extra interest. This piece has several hairline cracks and chips under the rim. Dimensions: height 2 1/2" (6 cm), diameter 10 1/4" (26 cm). | |||||||
