Manchurian Cranes Painting, Korea, 1840
The Manchurian cranes and ancient pine tree in this 150-year-old Korean painting have been used throughout Asia for centuries as symbols to convey wishes for long life and happy marriage. The two red-headed cranes were adopted as emblems of both longevity and fidelity because cranes mate for life and were believed to live well beyond 600 years of age. The pine tree was used as a symbol of long life since it is forever green. Red trumpet flowers and touches of blue on the old tree trunk and in the feathers of the soaring bird in the upper left contrast nicely with muted tones in the rest of this painting, which is done in ink and color on paper. The work is unsigned and, while that could place it in the folk art category, it is executed with fine style and technique. It is matted in blue/grey silk with a thin gold holding line separating the mat and painting. The narrow dark wood frame is in Asian style, plain with rounded corners on both inside and outside edges. The painting is in excellent condition. Dimensions with frame: height 53 1/2" (136 cm), width 19" (48 cm), depth 1" (3 cm). Dimensions of painting only: height 46 1/2" (118 cm), width 13" (33 cm).
