Lao Silver Betelnut Box
A singha, a mythical lion-like animal done in high relief, catches the light on the lid of this late 19th century silver betel box from Laos. Betel chewing was part of life in many southeast Asian countries, and offering the components of the chew to guests was essential to hospitality. The boxes used to store and carry the leaves, seeds, lime paste and spices for a quid of betel often were impressive works of art. This box held a spice sometimes added to create an aromatic effect, especially when women chewed betelnut. The small box is lavishly beaded and decorated with flowers and leaves on all surfaces including the bottom. It is pleasing to look at and its long years of use have made it pleasing to touch. It is in excellent condition. Dimensions: height 3" (8 cm), diameter 3 1/2" (9 cm).
