| Wine pitchers as large as this one (nearly 20 inches in height) from the Republic of Georgia show the Georgians' high regard for the products of their vineyards. Incised designs of grape leaves decorate the sides and neck of this handsome silver over copper container from the late 19th/early 20th century. The copper shows through the thin silver coating for an interesting patina. Such a pitcher would have been used at the frequent traditional banquets, called supras, an important element of Georgian culture, when toasting marathons with local wines take place. The toastmaster begins these events with toasts on a global level to world harmony, then moves on to toast world leaders, poets, musicians, actors, countries, cities and villages until, several hours later, the individuals at the table begin toasting each other. This server survived the heavy use and is in very good condition. Dimensions: height 19 1/2" (47 cm), diameter 9" (23 cm). | |||||||
