Bronze Burmese Buddha with Disciples
This bronze 17th century Buddha is attended by two important disciples--the monk, Sariputta, on his right and the monk, Mogallana, on his left. This magnificent group of three figures has a long history in Burmese art, appearing on 12th century plaques excavated at Pagan, and on stone reliefs down through the centuries until the late 18th century when sculptors began portraying the two monks separately. Here the monks are shown kneeling on long lotus stems. All three figures show the remains of gold leaf, which is applied to Buddha images by the devout during their pilgrimages to temples. The bronze has a soft dark grey/green patina. The Buddha is seated on a cushion of lotus buds atop a high, stepped, waisted throne. Facial features are Pagan with suggestions of Khmer influence in the fuller lips and prominently modeled brows. The tightly curled hair is topped with a simple, unadorned finial, and the robe is close-fitting with no ornamentation. This rare bronze is in very good condition. Dimensions: height 14 1/2" (37 cm), width 11" (28 cm), depth 6" (15 cm).
