Remarkable carving skill makes this late 19th/early 20th century container a handsome relic of the days when time and care were given to making utilitarian objects for Chinese households. The pleasingly clean form is created by the curved handle and spout, each carved seamlessly as part of staves that are integrated with 13 additional staves to form the container. A symbol carefully carved and gilded on the handle most likely had a significant meaning for the family. This piece, from Zheijiang Province, may have been used for serving wine. It is in good condition, with appropriate wear showing on the bottom rim. There is a surface crack at the side of the handle (see photo enlargement # 1). Dimensions: height 11 ½” (29 cm) at handle; diameter of bowl 9 “(23 cm); diameter including spout 12” (30.5 cm). Opening inside the bowl measures 8” (20 cm) in diameter and is 4 ½” (11.5 cm) high.
