A dragon’s mouth holds the flame in this 19th century bronze oil lamp from Ceylon. The dragon head and lamp base, cast as a separate unit, screw off the top tiered part of the lamp, which is hollow to hold the oil (see photo enlargement #3). The oil flows down through the dragon head to feed a wick threaded into the mouth. A heavy chain cast in double links is attached to a loop at the top of the lamp, allowing it to be used either as a hanging or a standing piece (see photo enlargement #6). Thi ...click for details

This hand hammered bronze gong from Burma emits a mid-range mellow tone when struck at the center of its starburst pattern with a padded mallet. Hanging circular gongs of this sort are used in a Burmese orchestra, where an ornate lacquered wood gong circle, called a “kyi waing” surrounds 20 or so gongs of graduated sizes and tones. Gongs of various sizes also are used for Buddhist rites in temples and monasteries throughout Burma. When created for use as musical instruments, these carefully hand ...click for details

A classic Burmese bronze Buddha from the late 19th/early 20th century, with the simple, unadorned lines of the Ava Period, is softened with roundness in the face and body. The stepped throne, rather than the traditional diamond shape, also is rounded, adding to the settled, secure look of the figure. Legacies of the traditional Ava style also are seen in the well defined brow over lowered eyes, the slight smile, and a band separating hair and forehead. (See a very similar face on another bronz ...click for details

This bronze leogryph figure with human face is from early 20th century Burma and is a variation of the Buddhist temple guardian called manok-thi-ha or manushi, names derived from the Sanskrit words for man (manu) and lion (simha). Burmese manok-thi-ha often have double rear quarters (two bums—see our catalog item 63-37). This one is single-bummed and outfitted with heavy necklace, chest ornament and lots of swirls. The fantastic manok-thi-ha, a creature from Buddhist mythology, is said to roam M ...click for details

A bronze oil lamp that dates to the latter years of Burma’s British colonial period (1890-1941) is built around the figure of a smiling Burman holding out a small oil receptacle. The piece, nearly two feet in height, has a decidedly art deco look, in spite of the figure’s native dress. According to Sylvia Fraser-Lu in her book, “Burmese Crafts Past and Present,” British colonial administrators had little appreciation for indigenous Burmese art but they acknowledged the superior metalworking abil ...click for details

A small bronze kyizi gong from a village in Burma is flanked by two coiled naga, sea dragons that are Buddhist icons of protection revered throughout Southeast Asia. Kyizi, (pronounced chi-z) are, as far as we know, unique to Burma, and cast in a variety of sizes, from smaller than this one to quite large, heavy pieces. Suspended on a rope, they are struck on the upturned ends so the gong swings in a circle and emits a vibrating tone, used to mark donations to the monastery or to alert local re ...click for details

A late 19th century hand hammered copper tray from the Republic of Georgia has a thin coating of tin, similar to wine pitchers we have from the same country. (See our catalogue listings 27-85 and 28-01.) This large (26-inch diameter) tray most likely was used to hold such wine pitchers during the festive wine-infused dinners called supras that are traditional in the Georgian culture. The tray is in good condition; the top side shows evidence of long use, the bottom surface shows little wear. A ...click for details

A Mon Buddha from 18th century Burma has the thick facial features and very high finial that identify Mon images from the Ava period. The waisted throne is edged with geometric decorations typical of Mon images of the era. We purchased this figure about 10 years ago in a lot that included, we thought, only Shan Buddha figures of later vintage. This one is clearly from an earlier period and, although there is some overlap between the Shan and Mon sub-states in the characteristics of their Buddha ...click for details

A large 19th century bronze bell from Burma has a tall holding ring with legendary figures from Burmese Buddhist iconography—kinnari, half man/half bird creatures, and manok-thi-ha, half man/half lion sphinx-like images. Two kinnari stand with their large wings spread upward to create the form of the tall spire. This late 19th century bronze bell is cast in the manner of the much larger bells that are prominent features in Buddhist temples and monasteries throughout Burma. It hangs from a metal crossbar that also supports a U-shaped handle flanked with “to-naya” (snake-like dragons) that match those on the bell hanger. This relatively small bell (eight inches in height) has a clapper, unlike the huge bells that weigh a ton or more and are struck on the outside with a wooden mallet. The beauty of this large bronze Burmese Buddha of healing is in its simplicity. The plain draped robe and the straight spare lines of the high stepped throne focus attention first on the peaceful face and next on the graceful hands. The triangular face is classic Ava, with broad sweeping brow, downcast eyes and small mouth in a slight smile. Fingers of the right hand, in earth touching mudra, rest with the tips bent gently outward; balanced in the left hand palm is the symbol of healing, a kalas ...click for details

Long, low Burmese hermit figures with their distinctive hats and monk robes represent heroes from ancient Buddhist legends and folk stories. According to legend, the hermits spend most of their lives in self deprivation striving to perfect themselves morally, and if they achieve that perfection are reborn as zaw-gyi (zagwi), supernatural beings who fly through water, land and air doing good deeds. Some stories say zaw-gyi live forever, others say they live a mere 80,000 years. They are venerated ...click for details

An interesting piece that evokes hilltribe elders and smoky fires in the mountains of the Golden Triangle, this pipe is made of seven sections fitted together over a wood shaft to form a long tube. The wood ball on the end fits over the shaft that runs down the center of the metal tube. Embossed designs of an exotic bird and foliage cover the tube, made of an alloy with silver content. The mechanics of usage or whether the pipe is usable is a mystery to us. We acquired it as part of a purchase ...click for details

A sleek bronze figure, cast in Burma about 40 years ago, assumes an art deco form as he smilingly holds up a receptacle for lamp oil. The design is likely a remnant of Burma's earlier colonial period (1890-1941) when British administrators, with little appreciation for indigenous Burmese art, commissioned ornamental images made to their own specifications. Burmese metalsmiths, whose skill was evident in the Buddhist art they produced, adapted their artistry to turning out secular European d ...click for details

A crowned bronze Buddha in the Arakan style sits in meditation on a double lotus throne that rests atop a large figural pedestal. This early 20th century lost wax casting of a royal Buddha follows a form introduced in the 14th century Arakan Kingdom that was located in what is now Rakhine in Western Burma. The high opulent crown, side flanges, ear plugs and elaborate chest ornament are Arakan jambhupati features. Origin of the unusual pedestal is not so easily discerned. The central figure most ...click for details
