Finely carved and fitted fretwork in this 19th century Chinese interior window panel is emphasized by the addition of a mirror. The abstract winged shapes surround a circle that seems to float within the fretwork. Many thousands of different fretwork patterns such as this were created in China for use as architectural or decorative elements. The hand carved wood pieces on this panel and on all antique Chinese fretwork are closely fitted and held together in a puzzle-like fashion without glue or ...click for details

This soaring form, called a gaelae (galae), is seen in Northern Thailand on the peaked rooftops of houses and other structures built by the Thai Lanna people. On old buildings gaelae are extensions of the ends of roof beams crossed to form a V-shape. On newer houses they usually are separate carvings such as this one and are attached to the peaks of the steep roofs after the basic structure is completed. A sinuous carved teakwood naga, nearly three feet in length, carries a half bird, half man kinnari braced in front of its long curved naga neck like a ship's figurehead. This late 19th century folk carving, resplendent with symbolism, once graced the front of a Burmese bullock cart. A primary means of family transportation in old Burma, wood bullock carts were customized with carved iconic figures meant to ensure the well being of family members. This naga carries figures representing the fa ...click for details

Artist Levan Mekhouzla merges lyrical with architectural and East with West in this quiet etching of a simple scale. Mekhouzla lives and works in his native Tbilisi in the Republic of Georgia as well as in Paris, and his work is exhibited throughout Europe. Early training as an architect forms the foundation for his carefully executed etchings and lithographs, which he then softens with whimsy. Influences from Tbilisi, where Asia blends with Europe, also inform his work, and he often includes no ...click for details

A wood panel carved in relief conveys wishes for a long and joyous life with five familiar Chinese symbols for longevity. The late 19th/early 20th century panel once was part of a decorative screen or perhaps a large piece of furniture. Framed, the carving becomes an unusual and handsome representation of wishes for good fortune. The symbols are carved within a cartouche and have the supernatural quality of Chinese folklore. A fox in a pine tree takes on a half-human form, relating to Chinese fo ...click for details
