This graceful Mandalay Buddha, nearly two feet in height, seems to float above its low double lotus throne. The floating effect is achieved with the robe, edged in a Burmese lacquer technique called thayo that ripples lightly across the wide pedestal and cascades in loose folds down the front and back of the slender figure’s left shoulder. An early 20th century Mandalay Buddha, with hands in graceful dharmachakra, or teaching gesture, is finely carved of dense Burmese teak wood. Richness is added in the way the dark red lacquer, applied to the wood as an undercoating, shows subtly through light gilding. This crowned Shan Buddha sits in bhadrasana, or Western position, on a tall stepped throne of unusual design. The carved teak wood figure has the winged side flanges and spired crown centered with high finial that identify royal Buddha figures from Burma. A Mon Buddha from 18th century Burma has the thick facial features and very high finial that identify Mon images from the Ava period. The waisted throne is edged with geometric decorations typical of Mon images of the era. We purchased this figure about 10 years ago in a lot that included, we thought, only Shan Buddha figures of later vintage. This large dramatic sculpture of a royal Jambupati Buddha is two feet tall, carved of dense Burmese teak wood, with curled open-work flanges and a crown with five intricately rendered leaf-covered spires. Long earrings hang forward and settle next to a necklace carved in high relief. Crossed over the chest is a sal-we, a sign of lofty rank.
