This 18th century ceramic figure of the Chinese Buddhist bodhisattva of mercy is unusual in several respects. The form is uncharacteristically simple for the popular Chinese goddess who typically was shown with elaborate flowing robes. The pert face is particularly different with its full lips, upturned nose and wide eyes. Only one hand is visible and it rests on her right knee. A fragrant sandalwood carving done done in the late 20th century shows the Buddhist bodhisattva Guanyin sitting on a high throne entwined with two dragons and flowers. Carved in Burma for the Chinese market, she is depicted in the traditional Chinese Guanyin pose with a vase and staff. Her face, with large eyes and a small mouth, has a thoughtful expression. Hand-loomed silk from Meiji Era Japan with a vignette from a folk legend about a young boy who neglected his duty of caring for the water buffalo and, with the help of a goddess acting as fairy godmother, was taught about responsibility. The scene is outlined with meticulous cutwork, a process that involves cutting away tiny sections of threads to outline the design woven into the fabric.
