$850

This cast metal Buddha from Cambodia stands on a low pedestal with right hand raised in abhaya mudra, a gesture of blessing and protection. The facial features—full lips, short nose and heavy-lidded eyes, as well as the rounded head of tight curls with a wide usnisa (top knot) and no finial—are classic Khmer. Decorative detailing on the body-hugging robe is emphasized by the silver tone of the heavy metal alloy. This early 20th century Buddha is in good condition, with some surface pitting conce ...click for details

The gentle face of a Buddhist monk from Burma is painted on a large leaf from a Bodhi tree. The Bodhi leaf, with its distinctive shape, is an important element of Buddhist iconography in Southeast Asia as Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment while meditating under a Bodhi (also called Bo) tree. In this painting, the monk’s expressive face appears to be looking through the leaf, adding an almost magical aura. The leaf rests on black cloth, and the work is unsigned. Painted in the late 2 ...click for details

This Japanese ceramic hibachi from the late Meiji Period (1868-1912) has a country scene—a rustic dwelling snuggled amid old trees, hills and distant mountains. Ceramic hibachi were introduced in Meiji times as portable alternatives to the larger copper-lined wood hibachi and the heavier bronze receptacles. Whether ceramic or metal, hibachi held glowing charcoal embers used as a source of heat during cold Japanese winters. The ceramic ones generally were placed under low tables (kotatsu) that h ...click for details

This silver and clay pipe is from a Lawa tribal group living in northern Thailand. (For Lawa pipes similar to this one, see “Peoples of the Golden Triangle,” by Paul and Elaine Lewis, Thames and Hudson, 1998, p. 66.) The Lawa, also called Lua or Wa/Lawa, are a lowland people, one of the smaller tribal groups among the hill tribes of Thailand, Burma and Laos. The black clay bowl on this pipe is in pristine condition, suggesting it replaced earlier bowls that were affixed to the old curved silver ...click for details

This fantastic composite creature, a “tadiya yupa,” with features of a lion, goat, bird and serpent, once stood as a good omen in a Buddhist temple in Burma. Often referred to as brave lions, such friendly/fierce chimera figures are much loved in Burma, appearing in temple art and on personal items such as medicine and betel boxes. They are regarded both as protectors and as dispensers of good fortune. This one is particularly impressive because of its size and detailing. It is carved of Burmes ...click for details

Chinese opera characters are carved in relief on this late 19th century wood roundel. The central character strokes his beard and looks pleased; the figure on the right thrusts his drinking cup aloft. In the background, a barefoot servant runs off holding a small scroll. A bat, Chinese emblem of good fortune, is carved into the base of the piece. While the two main characters on the roundel are in excellent condition, the figure of the running servant is inexplicably worn on the face (see photo ...click for details

This late Qing Dynasty teacup box has a high handle carved with the figure of a deer, an auspicious Chinese symbol used to wish longevity. Foliage, flowers and scalloping are carved on both sides of the handle as well as on the ear-like curved ends that hold the handle in place. The rich red lacquer on the wooden box contrasts nicely with touches of deep, dark green and faint gilding. The container is fitted with a removable half-lid that allowed stacks of traditional Chinese teacups without ha ...click for details

$140

This two-headed terracotta dragon is a replica of dragons that topped walls surrounding the ancient Central Asian city of Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The Samarkand wall and its dragons, though long gone, seem to occupy a place in the collective memories of the polyglot population of present-day Uzbekistan. This piece was made by a Tajik artisan who lives near Samarkand, and is a small representation of the long, rich and often perplexing history of Central Asia. Neither the artisan nor anyone else w ...click for details

An early 20th century Mandalay Buddha, with hands in graceful dharmachakra, or teaching gesture, is finely carved of dense Burmese teak wood. Richness is added in the way the dark red lacquer, applied to the wood as an undercoating, shows subtly through light gilding. A most outstanding feature of this Buddha image is its peaceful and settled aura, which is compelling from every angle. The face is serene, with downcast eyes under sweeping brows, and full, slightly upturned lips. Loose draping o ...click for details

A late 19th century hand hammered copper tray from the Republic of Georgia has a thin coating of tin, similar to wine pitchers we have from the same country. (See our catalogue listings 27-85 and 28-01.) This large (26-inch diameter) tray most likely was used to hold such wine pitchers during the festive wine-infused dinners called supras that are traditional in the Georgian culture. The tray is in good condition; the top side shows evidence of long use, the bottom surface shows little wear. A ...click for details
