A Japanese silk summer-weight hitoe obi has impressionistic designs of graceful dancers and tori gates in cooling shades of silver on a purple background. This woven silk kimono belt is unlined and constructed of one layer of fabric, unlike the more formal maru and fukuro obi. A cloud pattern in purple and silver on the reverse side of the fabric shows through under the weave on the right side of the material, giving the silver designs an attractive shimmer that varies from tones of pink to blue ...click for details

A sinuous carved teakwood naga, nearly three feet in length, carries a half bird, half man kinnari braced in front of its long curved naga neck like a ship's figurehead. This late 19th century folk carving, resplendent with symbolism, once graced the front of a Burmese bullock cart. A primary means of family transportation in old Burma, wood bullock carts were customized with carved iconic figures meant to ensure the well being of family members. This naga carries figures representing the fa ...click for details

From a nature study series by Lali Lomtadze of the Republic of Georgia, this mixed media on paper takes a realistic look at leaves, their patterns, shapes and role as food for insects. Noticeable in the composition are two leaves with bite-sized pieces missing, presumably the result of a bug's dinner. Apparently the artist painted just what she saw after propping the stems in a container, appropriate for her series theme of nature in a vase. Whimsy is added with random lines scratched around ...click for details

A mixed media study by Lali Lomtadze from the Republic of Georgia puts branches, transparent flowers and floating debris into a lacy composition that combines both the order and chaos of nature. It is one of a series by the Tbilisi artist in which she closely examines small bits of nature placed haphazardly into containers. Lali Lomtadze has had solo shows beginning in the mid 1980s in Japan, Sweden, Russia, Poland and Ukraine. Her work has been in joint exhibitions in the U.S., Germany, Denmark ...click for details

Filial respect, a cornerstone of Chinese culture, is portrayed in this woodblock print from the Huxian painting community in Shaanxi Province. Although sometimes attributed solely to Confucian thought, filial piety has been of paramount importance within all belief systems in China and throughout most other Asian countries as well. There is charm and nostalgia in this glimpse back into China's not very distant past. The woodcut was produced in a rural painting cooperative that was one of abo ...click for details

The gorgeous padded silk on this late 19th century Japanese obi has the softness and subtle sheen found only on fine old obi. Unlike the stiff lining usually found on the maru style, a pliable padding was used on this one, which makes it smooth and inviting to the touch. The silver and apricot flowers gleam on a warm brown background. As a maru obi, the patterned silk covers both sides of the 12-3/4 foot length. The piece is in excellent condition throughout. Measurements: length 152" (381 ...click for details

An 18th century Chinese oil pitcher has a thick glaze decorated with blue calligraphy done in the loose, free "wet brush" manner. Collected for its spontaneity of design, Swatow ware with this type of calligraphy was made in South China and exported from the port of Swatow to countries throughout Southeast Asia. The cursive characters were applied with a very wet brush, depositing heavier, darker color at the ends of the strokes. Though similar in design and color to the Swatow plates ...click for details
