A bronze oil lamp that dates to the latter years of Burma’s British colonial period (1890-1941) is built around the figure of a smiling Burman holding out a small oil receptacle. The piece, nearly two feet in height, has a decidedly art deco look, in spite of the figure’s native dress. According to Sylvia Fraser-Lu in her book, “Burmese Crafts Past and Present,” British colonial administrators had little appreciation for indigenous Burmese art but they acknowledged the superior metalworking abil ...click for details

This silver and clay pipe is from a Lawa tribal group living in northern Thailand. (For Lawa pipes similar to this one, see “Peoples of the Golden Triangle,” by Paul and Elaine Lewis, Thames and Hudson, 1998, p. 66.) The Lawa, also called Lua or Wa/Lawa, are a lowland people, one of the smaller tribal groups among the hill tribes of Thailand, Burma and Laos. The black clay bowl on this pipe is in pristine condition, suggesting it replaced earlier bowls that were affixed to the old curved silver ...click for details

$200

An interesting piece that evokes hilltribe elders and smoky fires in the mountains of the Golden Triangle, this pipe is made of seven sections fitted together over a wood shaft to form a long tube. The wood ball on the end fits over the shaft that runs down the center of the metal tube. Embossed designs of an exotic bird and foliage cover the tube, made of an alloy with silver content. The mechanics of usage or whether the pipe is usable is a mystery to us. We acquired it as part of a purchase ...click for details

A sleek bronze figure, cast in Burma about 40 years ago, assumes an art deco form as he smilingly holds up a receptacle for lamp oil. The design is likely a remnant of Burma's earlier colonial period (1890-1941) when British administrators, with little appreciation for indigenous Burmese art, commissioned ornamental images made to their own specifications. Burmese metalsmiths, whose skill was evident in the Buddhist art they produced, adapted their artistry to turning out secular European d ...click for details

The mellow surging tone produced by this bronze pagoda gong rang out across the grounds of a Buddhist monastery in Burma to announce devotions or a donation to the temple. Called a "kyizi" (pronounced chi-z), the large heavy gong was suspended from a rope and struck on one upturned end with a small wood mallet so it swung in a circular motion, emitting a rich vibrating tone. (See a kyizi gong in "Burmese Crafts Past and Present" by Sylvia Fraser-Lu, Oxford University Press, 1 ...click for details

The low, rich sound of this Burmese temple gong is pleasant and gentle, yet impossible to ignore. We found the hand hammered bronze gong while traveling in Burma many years ago. The stand, constructed of aged, reclaimed elm wood, was custom made in China using traditional joinery methods. Thick, heavy bronze, blackened in the Burmese style, is responsible for the haunting sound of the gong. The striker, also made in Burma, has a hand sewn fabric cover. Dimensions of gong only: diameter 21" ...click for details

While traveling in Burma (Myanmar) many years ago, we were enchanted by the particularly sonorous sounds of Burmese bronze gongs. Our resulting small shipment of various sizes of these gongs remained in storage until we had stands made for them in China. The stands are constructed with traditional Chinese tenon joinery of aged, reclaimed elm wood. The bright red fabric-covered striker, hand sewn in Burma, has the proper degree of softness to produce a full sound from this relatively small gong, ...click for details
