A lacquer betel box is signed on the lid with the name of the maker, Bathama U Carek. The etched portrait under the name perhaps was a representation of the artisan. The date 1324 that appears below the sketch is based on the Burmese calendar, and means this piece was made in 1963. The inside is fitted with two trays to accommodate ingredients for assembling a quid of betel. The deep lid kept the betel leaves fresh.
