$875

This crowned Shan Buddha sits in bhadrasana, or Western position, on a tall stepped throne of unusual design. The carved teak wood figure has the winged side flanges and spired crown centered with high finial that identify royal Buddha figures from Burma. Shan artisans often added Arakanese accoutrements such as long ear pieces and ornate epaulets and chest ornaments to jambhupati (crowned) Buddha but this one has none of those; instead, the carver provided a striking throne that nicely balance ...click for details

$395

A medicine box from Burma in the form of a mythical composite animal is carved of the local dense teak wood and lacquered in red that has worn and aged to reveal a primary coating of black lacquer, creating a pleasing patina. We have seen other old Burmese medicine boxes in strange animal shapes, perhaps carved with the intent of scaring off ill omens. This one appears to be part tiger, part dragon, which is the second such combination we have seen, suggesting that this particular pairing was a ...click for details

$790

A serene black vintage Buddha carved of dense Burmese teak emits a glow as a result of its lacquer treatment—first a coat of red lacquer, then a sheer top layer of black applied very sparingly so the red shines subtly through. This is a reversal of the traditional Burmese lacquer technique involving numerous coats of black lacquer covered with numerous coats of red, which produced handsome though much more formal antique pieces. The striking impact of this mid-20th century Buddha is heightened b ...click for details

The Ramayana characters of Hamunan, the white monkey god, and Sita, the abducted wife of Rama, form the handle of this hand carved teak rice scoop from Burma. Hanuman is depicted carrying Sita back across the sea to Rama after rescuing her from the evil king Ravanna. The figures are familiar icons in the arts of Southeast Asia, particularly in Burma where the many heroes and villains of The Ramayana are universally recognized because the epic is still regularly performed there in puppet shows an ...click for details

A Mandalay Buddha forms the sign of the wheel of Buddhist law with right thumb and forefinger touching in vitarka mudra, symbolizing intellectual searching and discussion. A striking feature of this Buddha is the masterfully rounded modeling that gives the figure a settled, serene aura. Carved of dense, heavy Burmese teak wood, the Buddha is seated on a low double lotus throne. A pair of pulleys that were used on a hand loom in Burma show the Burmese love for exuberant decorative elements on objects for everyday use. The tall carved peacocks are larger than the pulleys, and may have been just one of a number of such decorations on a woman’s loom. Simple household objects are traditionally well made and attractive in Burma, where no lines are drawn between fine arts and folk or applied arts. The peacock, emblem of the Kon-baung Dynasty (1752-1885), remains a favorite de ...click for details

Designed to display ceremonial weavings, this teak wood hanger from Sumatra is carved into a sinuous pattern of swirling vines. A slot below the pierced carving allows thin cloth to be slipped through so that the carved vines act as a headpiece or crown for the fabric. The dark honey-toned Indonesian teak and the organic feel of the carving complement a variety of collectible textiles, providing they are not too thick to be pulled easily through the slot. The hanger is shown in photographs here ...click for details

The well-defined scales on this carved teak wood naga from the Shan people of northeast Burma are an example of the intricate detailing they achieve with skilled applications of “thayo,” lacquer thickened with bone ash. Each scale is made of a thin coil of thayo painstakingly applied to the teak carving. Carving on the face, tail and winged feet also is enhanced with thayo, which dries to the hardness and durability of wood and, indeed, cannot be distinguished from wood. The naga, dragon or serp ...click for details
