Filial respect, a cornerstone of Chinese culture, is portrayed in this woodblock print from the Huxian painting community in Shaanxi Province. Although sometimes attributed solely to Confucian thought, filial piety has been of paramount importance within all belief systems in China and throughout most other Asian countries as well. There is charm and nostalgia in this glimpse back into China's not very distant past. The woodcut was produced in a rural painting cooperative that was one of abo ...click for details

Lavender jade from Burma is carved into a figure of Quanyin, the Buddhist bodhisattva revered in China as the goddess of mercy. Quanyin stands on the head of a dragon that curves up and behind her, with the tail curving over her head to create a halo. The figure, shown here hanging on a chain as a pendant, is carved on both sides. The lavender hue of the jade is most pronounced across the bottom of the piece where the jade has the greatest depth for the carving of the dragon head with a ball in ...click for details

Four fish swim on one side below calligraphy incised on a shoulder of the bottle; four fish on the other side swim among lotus plants, emblems of fruitfulness. For good measure, a ninth fish is incised between the two carved areas. Dating from mid to late 20th century, this piece is a relative newcomer in the venerable snuff bottle field. It is in excellent condition ex ...click for details

This tall baluster-form cloisonne urn from China is an artful presentation of the color blue--from tones of light powder through turquoise and violet to midnight. The blues are arranged on a white ground and sparked with touches of cinnabar red. Enameled on a brass base with brass wires, the blues portray scrolling foliage and flowers interspersed with classic Chinese repeat patterns (diaper). Starburst flowers and foliage encircle the widest part of the form. Stylized upright leaves march aroun ...click for details

This delicate carving of Guanyin, the revered Chinese goddess of mercy and compassion, was done in Burma in Burmese jade. Evidently carved for the ethnic Chinese community there, it is Chinese in style, with the goddess wearing her traditional headpiece and robe, holding a vase and standing on waves. She is carved in relief against a large curving dragon, which is fully visible in detail on the back side of the pendant. This jade piece is in excellent condition, and hangs from a fine gold chain. ...click for details
