$120

An unusual handcarved vase of hardwood native to Uzbekistan shows the strong relationship in aesthetics between Middle Eastern Persian or Iranian design and designs used by the Uzbek people of Central Asia. This piece is the product of an Uzbek family woodcarving business run by the family matriarch, herself a second generation woodcarver. Although the business mainly produces large ornate furniture for the local market in Uzbekistan, family members take great delight in creating small, carefull ...click for details

A Rajasthani botanical miniature on handmade paper by Bikaner artist Raju Swami is green and gold with deep gold flowers shading to orange/red. An exotic white butterfly hovers over the meticulously veined flowers. Bikaner, a remote walled desert town in western India, has a miniaturist tradition in both Mughal and Rajasthani styles. This artist, who grinds his own mineral colors and makes his own brushes that sometimes consist of only a few squirrel hairs, produces particularly fine botanicals. ...click for details

A Balinese interpretation of Romeo and Juliette figures is carved in yellow hibiscus wood. It is from the studio of I. W. Mudano, a second generation master carver who has exhibited internationally for decades. He works primarily with yellow hibiscus wood, producing both original abstract forms and traditional Balinese figures and masks. This carving, he says, depicts the couple from the Balinese folk version of Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliette. A visit to the Mudano studio in Mas, near Ubud ...click for details

$450--set of 3

Three bamboo cages made by fishermen in Japan to harvest shrimp are wonderful examples of the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi. Organic forms, simplicity and imperfections render these humble objects beautiful and timeless. (The Japanese cultural concept of wabi-sabi is nicely presented in the small book "Wabi-Sabi for Artists, Designers, Poets and Philosophers" by Leonard Koren, Stone Bridge Press, Berkeley, California, 1994.) These three bamboo forms together take on new life as an un ...click for details

Natural variations in the color and grain of yellow hibiscus wood give this carved mask of a Balinese princess a special appeal. It is from the studio of I. W. Mudano, a second generation master carver who has exhibited internationally for decades. Embroidered with a traditional Kirghiz pattern on thick hand-rolled felt, this large bag evokes the nomadic life of the people of Kirghizstan in Central Asia. Bags in this style held household items and were hung on the walls of felt yurts. When it was time to fold the yurt and move on, the bags with the contents simply were slung on the camels' backs--no packing required. This bag was made by women from Kara-Kol, a valley town in the Tien Shan Mountains. They have formed a cooperative to pr ...click for details

A miniature painted and signed by Bikaner artist Raju Swami contemplates a man spinning thread. Done in soft blues, greens and browns, the study is in Bikaner style, and is soft and quiet. The man crouches on the ground, stares pensively at the cotton in his hand, and appears to be thinking thoughts thousands of miles removed from his task. The miniature, signed lower right, is in perfect condition. Dimensions overall: height 7" (18 cm), width 5" (12 cm). Dimensions of image: height 6- ...click for details

Made of handbeaten copper, lidded urns in this design are used for household water storage in Kathmandu, Nepal, where many homes do not have running water. Daily trips to community wells are made, usually by women, who carry water home in narrow necked vessels, then pour it into containers like this. Copper vessels of all sorts are made in Patan, the artisan section of the city, where small back streets echo with the sounds of copper and other metals being beaten into bowls, pots, utensils, vats ...click for details

In a folk painting from Huxian County, Shaanxi Province, two charming little girls are seen from the back as they walk to school. One of them appears to be whispering a secret to her friend. Gouache on paper, the painting is unsigned, as is typical for such folk pieces. Huxian (Huhsien) was China's first peasant painting community, established in 1958 in a rural region about an hour's drive outside the city of Xian. From Huxian the peasant painting movement spread across China and by 198 ...click for details
