This large framed Korean brush painting of a stand of bamboo is signed and sealed by Korean artist Jea Min. The finely constrained lines in this late 19th century work show the subtlety of the brush in the hands of a master. Ink and slight color on paper, it is matted with plain black silk and set within a traditional wood rounded corner Korean frame. A thin gold holding line separates the painting and mat. Touches of color appear in the red artist's seal on the lower right and in the faint b ...click for details

A miniature painting of an Ottoman gentleman is signed by Riza-Zade, a Persian artist who was brought to serve in the Ottoman court in the early 19th century. Although the work is richly adorned with gold and touches of vivid red, the subject's reflective expression and loose green robe give the painting a quiet, subdued feeling. Judging by a small area of minor damage to back surface of the paper, the painting most likely was preserved in a book. It is in excellent condition, and signed in ...click for details

A mist-shrouded water scene in soft colors centers on a small houseboat being poled up a canal. This watercolor by contemporary Shanghai painter Zhao-Nian Xi, sealed by the artist in the lower right corner, is characteristic of his technique of using large muted or blank spaces to focus attention on one element. In his scenes of villages along a network of canals near Shanghai, he delivers in each a small, intimate look at one aspect of life. This watercolor is matted and is in excellent condit ...click for details

Charcoal on paper is transformed into rippling water reflecting huge ceramic jars in this work signed by Vietnamese artist "My." The jars, though they dwarf both boat and man, serve somehow to draw the viewer into these smaller elements, creating an intimate portrait of the white-beaded grandfather poling his vessel up the river. This Danang artist specializes in capturing with charcoal such moments in the lives of her country's elder citizens. (See a similar work by this artist in ...click for details

The distinctive Kishangarh School of miniature painting, characterized by elegantly elongated people with pointed chins and long stylized eyes under drooping eyelids, developed in the early 1700s under the patronage of this 10th ruler of Kishangarh. A young boy in service as a novice monk sets out on his morning rounds to beg for food in this watercolor that conveys the essence of Burma. It is the practice for boys between the ages of about 7 and 13 years of age to leave their families and live for a time as novices at their local monastery where they receive instruction and live monastic lives. This painting, signed by Khan Bo, captures the boy's sense of duty, picturing him alone in a sun-baked Burmese landscape. We unfortunately are ...click for details

Canal houses just steps away from the water are shrouded in early morning mist in this watercolor by contemporary Shanghai painter Zhao-Nian Xi. The left side of the painting is blank, a variation of a compositional formula of the Southern Sung school used quite often by this artist. (For another example, see our stock #36-58.) In this work, the empty space intensifies the quiet early morning feel of the scene. The water is suggested by a few white lines and faint reflections. The monochromatic ...click for details

Shanghai contemporary artist Zhao-Nian Xi represents his country's beloved Huangshan Mountain in this watercolor by devoting the major portion of the painting to the sky. Occupying most of the space from the lower left corner to upper right corner, the sky communicates the vastness and heights of Huangshan's peaks. The technique is a variation of the "one corner" compositional formula of the Southern Sung school, which leaves half the picture nearly blank, adding tension to the ...click for details

A village canal scene is done in tawny tones against a gauzy background by contemporary Shanghai painter Zhao-Nian Xi. The artist works primarily in watercolor on paper, and has focused particularly on small villages near Shanghai where life centers on a network of canals. He often chooses to leave portions of his scenes shrouded in mist as he did here with the top of the curved bridge and the more distant house. Zhao-Nian Xi was born in 1944 and was graduated from the Shanghai School of Fine Ar ...click for details
