A medicine box from Burma in the form of a mythical composite animal is carved of the local dense teak wood and lacquered in red that has worn and aged to reveal a primary coating of black lacquer, creating a pleasing patina. We have seen other old Burmese medicine boxes in strange animal shapes, perhaps carved with the intent of scaring off ill omens. This one appears to be part tiger, part dragon, which is the second such combination we have seen, suggesting that this particular pairing was a ...click for details

Designed to display ceremonial weavings, this teak wood hanger from Sumatra is carved into a sinuous pattern of swirling vines. A slot below the pierced carving allows thin cloth to be slipped through so that the carved vines act as a headpiece or crown for the fabric. The dark honey-toned Indonesian teak and the organic feel of the carving complement a variety of collectible textiles, providing they are not too thick to be pulled easily through the slot. The hanger is shown in photographs here ...click for details

The well-defined scales on this carved teak wood naga from the Shan people of northeast Burma are an example of the intricate detailing they achieve with skilled applications of “thayo,” lacquer thickened with bone ash. Each scale is made of a thin coil of thayo painstakingly applied to the teak carving. Carving on the face, tail and winged feet also is enhanced with thayo, which dries to the hardness and durability of wood and, indeed, cannot be distinguished from wood. The naga, dragon or serp ...click for details

Hand carved of teak wood in Laos, this hanger provides an elegant way to display large collectible textiles. The end pieces are fully carved front and back with lotus flowers, Buddhist emblem of purity and perfection. (The symbolism is based on the fact that lotus flowers emerge from the mud beautiful and undefiled.) The center rod measures 31 ˝ inches (80 cm) across to hold over-sized textiles such as ikat blankets, silk shawls, sarongs, and tribal and folk weavings. End carvings are shown in o ...click for details

A reclining Mandalay Buddha with a serene face and gracefully draped robe is carved of dense Burmese teakwood. Detailed edging on the robe, and the forehead band and tightly curled hair over the wide Mandalay unisha are fine examples of the artful use of thayo, a thickened lacquer used with great expertise by Burmese lacquer artisans. Traces of gold add richness to the thin coating of red/brown lacquer that covers the figure. This exquisite mid-20th century Buddha is in excellent condition. Dime ...click for details

The warmth from an open fire reflected on the time-worn hands and face of a Vietnamese grandmother is felt when viewing this charcoal sketch by an artist from Danang who signs her work with only the name "My." The piece is dated 1997 and, although the open fire suggests a country or mountain locale, during that time it was still fairly common to see people gathered before fires on the back streets in some of Vietnam's cities. The woman's clothing indicates an urban grandmother, ...click for details

Beautiful detailing on this whimsical carved and lacquered box transform a pickled tea container into a wonderful piece of folk art. From early 20th century Burma, the container is carved so the long, graceful neck of the swan serves as the handle for the lid of the box. Underneath the swan is a tortoise, symbol of the universe in Buddhist iconography. A fish hanging from the swan's bill may have been included as a symbolic hope for abundance. Extensive detailing on the swan's head, neck ...click for details

From the Pagan region in Burma where much of the country's fine lacquerware was produced, this late 19th/early 20th century hsun-ok is a graceful example of the classic Pagan spired offering bowl. Various types of offering vessels--some with spires, some with low, stacked bowls, some with ornately carved trays--all within a broad classification called "hsun-ok," were made in Burma and used to take offerings of food to monasteries. Subtle variations in shape and ornamentation identi ...click for details

A silver bracelet from Java is formed by a sinuous coiling snake with over-sized eyes staring out at the curious world. Whimsy merges with realism as incised scales on the coil change into scrolling, a flower, then back to scales. The out-stretched head with its bug eyes appears to be searching for a friend rather than a victim. This bracelet can be worn several ways: on the wrist, pushed up toward the elbow or around the upper arm in Cleopatra fashion. We purchased this piece in the mid-1990s i ...click for details

Two native bearers hold aloft a bronze gong creating a tableau that was likely made for a colonial official during Burma's long colonial period (1885-1941). This is a large piece--the figures nearly two feet tall, weighing 22 pounds each--suited for use in a large dining room or entry hall. According to accounts in "Victoria and Albert Museum" by John Lowry, and "Burmese Crafts Past and Present" by Sylvia Fraser-Lu, large, ornamental gong stands were among objects sought ...click for details
